When we need to clean our carpets or maintain them for the first time, we are often faced with the decision of finding the correct detergent. There are different types of detergents that are suitable for a particular method of carpet cleaning. Therefore, we should select the correct detergent for our cleaning. These detergents can be confusing sometimes which is why I’ll describe and classify them below:
1. Carpet Pre sprays
These detergents are there to help us remove heavy soils, oils, and grease from our carpet traffic lanes prior to the usual extraction or shampoo cleaning. We should purchase the carpet pre-sprays that prevent over-wetting, cleans effectively, and leaves minimal residue behind. Some of the pre-sprays include Pre-spray gold and Multi pro.

2. Carpet Extraction detergents
We use these detergents during hot water extrication cleaning. There are two types:
- Liquid detergents – they come in liquid formulation and they are acting emulsifiers that remove and suspend soils for effective cleaning with minimal residues. Some examples are extraction plus and fiber and fabric rins
- Powdered detergents – they come in powdered formulation and they are highly concentrated for greater results. We will use them for contract cleaning, truck mount units, and high-pressure extractors. Examples are Dry Blend and Crystal Green
3. Carpet Maintenance Products
These detergents are suitable for our low moisture cleaning operations. This cleaning operation is when we need to routinely maintain the condition of our carpets. There’s a wide range, that includes, contract carpet foam shampoo, fiber shampoo, and pure clean.

4. Deodorizers and Sanitizers
When we have animal excretions such as urine on our carpets, we need professional deodorizers and sanitizers to clean our carpets from them. High-performance sanitizers will help us deal with general musty odors. Our carpets are made of different fabrics therefore, we should pick detergents that don’t damage the color and texture of our carpets. Examples of professional deodorizers and sanitizers include Lemon fresh and Cheryl Carpet deodorizer.
5. Carpet Protective Treatments
After thoroughly cleaning and shampooing our carpets, we should use detergents that allow our carpets to have durable resistance to stains and soil. These detergents will help our carpets to maintain their new and fresh look immediately after cleaning them and for longer periods. Examples of these products are Fabric Seal, Shock away, and Fluoroseal.
6. Problem Solvers and Additives for carpet cleaning
During deep carpet cleaning, we require important problem solvers that allow our solutions to dissolve and break down soils. These detergents are defoamers, oxidizing boosters, solvent additives, and debrowning solutions. They are necessary for removing stubborn dirt such as filtration soils and draught marks on carpets. We can use some of these detergents to boost the other detergents in shampoos, stubborn stain removal, and extraction detergents. Examples are Ultrapac Renovate, Citra-Boost, and Oxibrite.
7. Spot and Stain Removal
Some stains on our carpets such, as spills, coffee beverages, and dyes are stubborn, and they cannot be removed by water-solution only. We will require special and professional spotting products to remove them. These detergents will help in breaking down stains for easy removal through blotting. Some of these detergents are Neutral Pro-spotter, Stain pro, and Filter-Out . Also, knowing more about what cleaning supplies and tools are helpful here.
